以下所錄,是03年時應朋友的要求,將他在閱讀中看到的一首英文小詩翻譯成中文的英文原文與中文譯文,今刊錄于此,希望與諸位英語專業(yè)研友就譯文展開討論.歡迎批評指正!

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time          贈單身男子
                     ——莫負韶華好時光

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,          玫瑰堪折直須折,
Old time is still a-flying;                去日匆匆一何多!
And this same flower that smiles today,       燦爛此花與君和,
Tomorrow will be dying.                孰知明日香魂落.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,       上有白日煌如炬,
The higher he’s a-getting,             一意攀登高如何!
The sooner will his race be run,          上行愈甚歸程促,
And nearer he’s to setting.             不覺已是西山迫.

That age is best which is the first,          歲月獨尊韶華貴,
When youth and blood are warmer;          青春意氣正蓬勃.
But being spent, the worse, and worst       一旦拋灑付逝水,
Times still succeed the former.             從此多舛嘆奈何.

Then be not coy, but use your time,       人生及時當有為,
And while ye may, go marry;             惺惺作態(tài)不需多.
For having lost but once your prime,          連理可結(jié)自當結(jié),
You may forever tarry.                盛年不再惟蹉跎.

Dear all,

Printed below is a small poem-like thing I did years ago. I call it a "poem-like thing" rather than a poem, for I am not all that certain whether it does deserve this precious name of poem. Anyway I attempted to express in English some peculiar states of mind I was then in. You will detect a certain bitter sense of disillusionment in this "poem", a certain pensiveness and a vehement longing for a meaning to base my life on. I hope you enjoy reading my little "poem". I would be more than happy to receive any comments on how it can be improved.

My Soul

My soul is a wingless specter charged with a natural urge for brightness,
Flying alone in the untracked cosmos utterly indifferent,
Against the immense sinister darkness
for a bleak ray of fire.

My soul is an unwilling tenant of my mortal coil,
whose confinement he frequently deserts
To set himself in free motions of exploration
in his unbounded realm of speculation and reasoning.

My soul is a lonely eagle gliding his way in the gray and gloomy sky,
Whose cries are only echoed by this airy emptiness and this unconscious tangibility.
No human imposition is potent enough to cripple him
In his constant and irresistible inquiries about his fellow souls and this cosmos.

My soul is a girl wounded and made skeptical in a failed love affair,
Wearing a cold countenance in judging one’s merit and assessing another’s constancy,
While inwardly craving and mad for a boy she could commit to once and for all.

In the deep chaste and unbroken night
I could feel my soul burning and dying for a meaning for his orientation.
It is a peculiar human pestilence that shall haunt me until I die.

My re-exam is quite satisfactory, I am enrolled in as a tuition-free student. See you in Nanjing University.
