PART ONE: LINGUISTICS (90%)

I: Define the following terms: (15points)
   competence & cardinal vowels & concordance &  case & systemic functional grammar

II. Briefly answer the following questions. (25 points)
1. What are the distinctive features of language?
2. Why is the distinction between diachronic and synchronic important in linguistics?
3. Give two examples to illustrate what is minimal pair and answer why it is important in studying the speech sounds of a particular language?
4. In what processes can a new word or expression be created? Give at least one example for each process.
5. Draw a diagram to illustrate Chomsky's Standard Theory.

III. Disambiguate the following sentences. (You may analyze and explain with tree diagrams and/or English/Chinese translation.) (15 points)
1. I saw her duck.
2. 愛(ài)上博物館。

IV. How will you interpret the sense relations between the "different" animals in the following diagram? (15 points)
      
V. In what dimensions could a set of synonyms be discriminated? Try to analyze the following sets of synonyms. (20 points)

PART TWO: TEACHING METHODOLOGY (30%)

PART THREE: TRANSLATION (30%)

I. Translate the following into Chinese.
The difference between the pair was, that while the father was violent and a bully, the son had thrice the nerve and courage of the parent, and could not merely make an attack, but resist it. Finding that the moment was now come when the contest between him and his father was to be decided, he took his dinner with perfect coolness and appetite before the engagement began. Old Osborne, on the contrary, was nervous, and drank much. He floudered in his conversation with the ladies, his neighbors: George's coolness only rendering him more angry. It made him half mad to see the calm way in which George, flapping his napkin, and with a swaggering bow, opened the door for the ladies to leave the room; filling himself a glass of wine, smacked it, and looked his father full in the face, as if to say, "Gentleman of the Guard, fire first."

II. Translate the following into English.
這個(gè)鎮(zhèn)的街面不大。十幾家鋪?zhàn)印资畱糇〖揖o緊夾著一條青石板街。鋪?zhàn)雍弯佔(zhàn)邮悄菢拥臄D密,以至一家煮狗肉,滿街聞香氣;以至誰(shuí)家娃兒跌跤碰脫牙、打了碗,街坊鄰里心中都有數(shù);以至妹娃家的私房話,年輕夫婦的打情罵俏,都常常被隔壁鄰居聽(tīng)了去,傳為一鎮(zhèn)的秘聞趣事、笑料談資。偶爾某戶人家弟兄內(nèi)訌,夫妻斗毆,整條街道便會(huì)騷動(dòng)起來(lái),人們往來(lái)奔走,相告相勸,如同一河受驚的鴨群,半天不得平息。不是逢圩的日子,街兩邊的住戶還會(huì)從各自的閣樓上朝街對(duì)面的閣樓搭長(zhǎng)竹竿,晾曬一應(yīng)布物:衣衫褲子,裙子被子。山風(fēng)吹過(guò),但見(jiàn)通街上空萬(wàn)國(guó)旗紛紛揚(yáng)揚(yáng),紅紅綠綠,五花八門。人在下邊過(guò),雞在下邊啼,貓狗在下邊梭竄,別有一種風(fēng)情,另成一番景象。

PART ONE: WESTERN CULTURE (30%)  此部分已不在考試范圍,顧不copy上來(lái)了。

PART TWO: LITERATURE (60%)

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real. When the door of happiness closes, another opens; but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one, which has been opened for us. Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

III. Translate the following into English (25%)
逢到和舊友談話,就不知不覺(jué)地把話題轉(zhuǎn)到舊事上去,這是我的習(xí)慣。我在這上面無(wú)意識(shí)地會(huì)感到一種溫暖地慰藉。可是這些舊友一年比一年減少了,本來(lái)只是屈指可數(shù)的幾個(gè),少去一個(gè)是無(wú)法彌補(bǔ)的。我每當(dāng)聽(tīng)到一個(gè)舊友死去的消息,總要惆悵多時(shí)。
學(xué)校教育給我們的好處不但只是灌輸知識(shí),最大的好處恐怕還在給與我們求友的機(jī)會(huì)上。這好處我到了離學(xué)校以后才知道,這幾年來(lái)更確切地體會(huì)到,深悔當(dāng)時(shí)毫不自覺(jué),馬馬虎虎地過(guò)去了。近來(lái)每日早晚在路上見(jiàn)到兩兩三三的攜了手或挽了肩膀走著的青年學(xué)生,我總艷羨他們有朋友之樂(lè),暗暗地要在心中替他們祝福。
