2018北外英美文學復試筆試題目回憶

2018年北外英美文學復試筆試沒有像以往考術語+經典作品分析，而是考了短篇小說分析。先給出了一篇短篇小說文章，之后就文本提出了六個問題，每個問題里一般有兩個小問（30分）。最后要求就文章的主題寫一篇不少于300字的分析（70分）。

今年的題目是Mark Halliday的Young Man on Sixth Avenue

以下題目并不是采用原文的措辭，而是依據我自己的回憶。

一、
1.  \"his brown shoes attaining the sidewalk without any faltering, his gait unaware of the notion that legs might ever want to rest.\"
Paraphrase this sentence. What is the young man\'s state of mind at this moment?

2.  \"the all had to see him, all the young women had to perceive him reaching the corner of Forty-ninth and Sixth, and they had to know he was a candidate.\"
What in particular is the young man a candidate for?
How to interpret these \"had to\"?

3.  \"a hard combination to beat\"
What does it means?

4.   Why \"this day in 1938 was the present\"?
Why it later changes into \"this pseudo-present\"?
（具體提問方式不記得了。大概就是分別解釋為什么有這兩種狀態。不用把二者聯系起來。）

5.   What is the narrative tone of this story?
Why is this young man not given a name?


6.   How does the time proceed in this story? Why？


二、short essay (in no less than 300words)
  Is there any difference between the young man\'s outlook and the old man\'s? Find evidence from the story and talk about your opinions about this change.
