1）But even more important是狀語從句嗎？如果是，是什么類型的狀從？
2）had been able to如果換成was able to 會如何？有何區(qū)別？

1），其實沒必要細摳，相當于what‘s more important，把what給省了
2），如果這樣還的話，會不嚴謹。原文had been able to 表示過去的過去一段時間可以做。。。 was able to 只能表示過去能干。。。

2）had been able to如果換成was able to 會如何？有何區(qū)別？

1）but是連詞，(even) more important是句首副詞短語。注意，這里是用形容詞作狀語的，但習慣上，仍然稱作句首副詞。與To be frank / Obviously / Personally，這一類的詞（組）在英語語法中稱作sentence adverb
2）這句話先換成現(xiàn)在時，如下：
It's the farthest that scientists has been able to look into the past, for what they are seeing were the patterns and structures that existed 15 billion yeays ago.
這里has been able的完成時態(tài)，只是與最高級farthest相配合的一種表示持續(xù)性的時態(tài)
又如：He's the most handsome man I've ever seen.
只是原句的時態(tài)全部相應地換成了過去時
