PART ONE: LINGUISTICS (90%)

III. Disambiguate the following sentences. (You may analyze and explain with tree diagrams and/or English/Chinese translation.) (15 points)

IV. How will you interpret the sense relations between the "different" animals in the following diagram? (15 points)

PART TWO: TEACHING METHODOLOGY (30%)

PART THREE: TRANSLATION (30%)

I. Translate the following into Chinese.
The difference between the pair was, that while the father was violent and a bully, the son had thrice the nerve and courage of the parent, and could not merely make an attack, but resist it. Finding that the moment was now come when the contest between him and his father was to be decided, he took his dinner with perfect coolness and appetite before the engagement began. Old Osborne, on the contrary, was nervous, and drank much. He floudered in his conversation with the ladies, his neighbors: George's coolness only rendering him more angry. II. Translate the following into English.

這個鎮的街面不大。十幾家鋪子、幾十戶住家緊緊夾著一條青石板街。鋪子和鋪子是那樣的擠密，以至一家煮狗肉，滿街聞香氣；以至誰家娃兒跌跤碰脫牙、打了碗，街坊鄰里心中都有數；以至妹娃家的私房話，年輕夫婦的打情罵俏，都常常被隔壁鄰居聽了去，傳為一鎮的秘聞趣事、笑料談資。偶爾某戶人家弟兄內訌，夫妻斗毆，整條街道便會騷動起來，人們往來奔走，相告相勸，如同一河受驚的鴨群，半天不得平息。不是逢圩的日子，街兩邊的住戶還會從各自的閣樓上朝街對面的閣樓搭長竹竿，晾曬一應布物：衣衫褲子，裙子被子。山風吹過，但見通街上空“萬國旗”紛紛揚揚，紅紅綠綠，五花八門。人在下邊過，雞在下邊啼，貓狗在下邊梭竄，別有一種風情，另成一番景象。

PART TWO: LITERATURE (60%)

逢到和舊友談話，就不知不覺地把話題轉到舊事上去，這是我的習慣。我在這上面無意識地會感到一種溫暖地慰藉。可是這些舊友一年比一年減少了，本來只是屈指可數的幾個，少去一個是無法彌補的。我每當聽到一個舊友死去的消息，總要惆悵多時。
學校教育給我們的好處不但只是灌輸知識，最大的好處恐怕還在給與我們求友的機會上。這好處我到了離學校以后才知道，這幾年來更確切地體會到，深悔當時毫不自覺，馬馬虎虎地過去了。近來每日早晚在路上見到兩兩三三的攜了手或挽了肩膀走著的青年學生，我總艷羨他們有朋友之樂，暗暗地要在心中替他們祝福。
